From Patent to Publication: VIVALDI Team Shows Long-Term Performance in CO₂ Electrolysis

We are proud to highlight the acceptance of the manuscript “Unlocking long-term stability in metal-based gas diffusion electrodes for CO₂ electroreduction” in EES Catalysis (Royal Society of Chemistry), authored by the VITO team, whose work has been instrumental in advancing this field. This research also made the January 2026 cover of EES Catalysis, highlighting its significance.

This open-access publication builds directly on the carbon-free gas diffusion electrode (GDE) technology for CO₂ electroreduction, patented last year, and represents a key outcome of the VIVALDI project.

This paper demonstrates multi-thousand-hour durability for CO₂-to-formate electrolysis under industrially relevant conditions. Importantly, the work shows that long-term performance can be sustained through electrolyte management and periodic reactivation, rather than relying on static catalyst stability.
