Life Cycle Assessment of Emerging Biotechnological Carbon Capture and Utilisation Technologies

The climate crisis is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity. Capturing CO₂ emissions and converting them into valuable products represents a key opportunity to transition from fossil-based chemicals and materials toward a circular, carbon-neutral economy. These Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technologies, particularly emerging biotechnological approaches, hold great promise but also raise important questions about their broader environmental impact.

This webinar, organised by the VIVALDI project, will explore the role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in evaluating low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) CCU technologies. LCA provides a holistic framework for assessing environmental impacts, not just in terms of climate change, but also across the entire value chain. It helps identify potential trade-offs, such as the use of critical raw materials or resource consumption.

Key topics will include methodological challenges, early-stage insights, and the importance of harmonisation in assessing these technologies. Our expert speakers will present real-world examples and discuss strategies for applying LCA effectively at low TRLs.

Stefan Kelnberger, Project Manager at DIN, the German Institute for Standardisation, will provide an overview of standardisation tools to harmonise Carbon Management activities.

Dr. Anna Petit Boix, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), will present findings on the environmental assessment of ionic liquids and their role in carbon capture.

Dr. Jorge Senán, Head of the Sustainability Assessment and Optimisation Team at Beta Technological Center, will explore how LCA, combined with process modelling and future-oriented scenarios, can inform the development of low-TRL technologies. He will focus on the production of CO₂-based organic acids.

Join us for this interactive session to gain a deeper understanding of how LCA can shape the development of sustainable CCU technologies from the ground up.
