From Waste to Resource: Insights from VIVALDI’s Latest Study

A new open-access study, co-authored by VIVALDI partners Falk Harnisch (UFZ) and Deepak Pant (VITO), features the research they conducted in the VIVALDI project, highlighting how microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) can turn wastewater into:

- Energy (electricity, hydrogen, methane)
- Clean water
- Recovered nutrients for agriculture

With global wastewater holding an estimated 800,000 GWh of untapped chemical energy annually, the potential is enormous.

From pilot-scale systems achieving up to 90% COD removal to real-world deployments in underserved regions, METs are moving closer to practical application — supporting circular economy goals and UN SDG 6.
