New Scientific Publication Builds on VIVALDI Results to Advance Sustainable Production of Bio-Based Chemicals

Researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona have published a new peer-reviewed study building on work carried out within VIVALDI and further developed by the ENG4BIO (Bioprocess Engineering and Applied Biocatalysis) research group.

The paper, "Bioprocess intensification for 3-hydroxypropionic acid production from methanol using engineered Komagataella phaffii", demonstrates how methanol can be converted into 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP), a valuable building block for chemicals used in polymers, advanced materials, and other industrial applications.

When produced from captured CO₂ and renewable energy, green methanol becomes a circular carbon source—showing how carbon can be kept in use while reducing reliance on fossil resources.

This publication is another example of how VIVALDI's vision of transforming CO₂ emissions into valuable products continues to create impact beyond the project's lifetime.

Congratulations to the authors Xavier Garcia Ortega, Giovanni Covaleda Cortés, Sílvia Àvila Cabré, Arnau Gasset, José Luis Montesinos-Seguí, Pau Ferrer and Francisco Valero Barranco on this achievement.
