New scientific review on the application of gas diffusion electrodes in bioeconomy

Paniz Izadi and Falk Harnisch, scientists at Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and partners of the VIVALDI project, have contributed to the scientific review “Application of gas diffusion electrodes in bioeconomy: An update”, which has been published on “Biotechnology and Bioengineering” (Wiley).

The combination of electrochemical and biotechnological processes is key to support the transition of today’s chemical industry towards sustainable production processes within a circular economy. In this context, the article illustrates the architecture, function principle and fabrication of gas diffusion electrodes (GDE), highlighting its application in the conversion of CO2, and describing the engineering aspects such as scale-up and the modeling of GDE-based processes.

The review presents an update on the application of GDE in bio-based production systems and emphasizes their large potential for sustainable development of new pathways in bioeconomy.
