Press Release – Celebrating the Results of the VIVALDI Project
After four years of innovation and collaboration, the VIVALDI project, funded by the EU’s Horizon2020 programme and led by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), is reaching its conclusion, delivering a pioneering methodology to convert industrial CO₂ emissions into valuable organic acids for the chemical sector.
Through a unique combination of electrochemical and biotechnological processes, the project successfully turned emissions from industries like food, pulp and paper into compounds such as formic acid and methanol, which were then used to produce bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived chemicals.
The results? A validated proof of concept showing real applications, from bioplastic cutlery to animal feed additives, paving the way for more circular, low-carbon production models in Europe and beyond.
Congratulations to the 16-member international consortium that made this possible. VIVALDI has not only demonstrated a viable CO₂-based value chain, but also set the stage for future scale-up and broader industrial adoption.
